What is oculoplastic surgery?
Sunday, November 15th, 2020, 4:35 amThe providers at Marion Eye Center and Optical have a wide range of services available for patients throughout the areas of Illinois and Missouri with 36 locations across the states. One of many services is that of oculoplastic surgery, or oculoplastics. This is a specialized area of ophthalmology that handles:
- Common eyelid disorders
- Orbits (bones around the eyes)
- The eyeball
- The tear (lacrimal) system
- Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
What is blepharoplasty?
There are times when patients begin to notice the signs of aging impacting their appearance, but it goes another step further for patients who have sagging skin around the eyes. The eyelids and brow can droop over time and cause individuals to not only look older than they feel, but experience blocking of their field of vision. The team of Marion Eye Center and Optical will often resolve this problem by removing excess tissue and skin to tighten the eye area and increase the field of vision that might previously have been blocked. The sagging skin removed during this oculoplastic procedure can help patients feel more confident in their appearance while turning back the hands of time, achieving a more youthful look to the eyes.
When is it time to undergo surgery?
Not every vision concern is treated with surgery. Many conditions can be addressed in alternative ways that are much less invasive. It is always a good idea to try more conservative treatment options for common eye and vision problems before turning to surgery. In fact, surgical procedures should always be a last resort and should rarely be the first line of defense against any eye or vision disorder that might be diagnosed. Our team of professionals will educate patients on their condition and help them decide when oculoplastic surgery may be required to improve one’s overall quality of life.
