What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the part of the eye responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. This damage is often caused by elevated pressure within the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP). Over time, this pressure can damage the optic nerve fibers, leading to gradual vision loss, particularly in peripheral (side) vision.

Though there are often no symptoms in the early stages, routine eye exams can detect glaucoma early, when treatment can help prevent further vision loss.

Advanced Glaucoma Diagnostics

At Marion Eye Center, we utilize the latest diagnostic technology to detect glaucoma early and monitor its progression. Our comprehensive evaluation includes:

These advanced tools allow us to provide an accurate diagnosis and create a customized treatment plan based on the severity and type of glaucoma you may have.

Glaucoma Treatments

Early treatment of glaucoma can help protect your vision. At Marion Eye Center, we offer a range of effective treatment options, including:

The most common first-line treatment for glaucoma, eye drops are designed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP). There are several different classes of eye drops available, including prostaglandins, beta blockers, alpha agonists, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Our team will work with you to find the best medication based on your specific condition and tolerance.

SLT is a safe and effective laser treatment for open-angle glaucoma. This procedure uses a low-energy laser to target the trabecular meshwork, the eye’s drainage system. The goal is to improve fluid drainage and reduce IOP, offering a non-invasive alternative to medication. SLT is typically a quick procedure with minimal discomfort, and it can be used as an adjunct to or replacement for eye drops.

For patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, a YAG Peripheral Iridotomy may be necessary. This laser procedure creates a small hole in the peripheral iris, allowing fluid to flow more freely within the eye and lowering IOP. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in our office with immediate results.

Micropulse CPC is a less invasive laser treatment that targets the ciliary body of the eye, which produces the fluid that leads to elevated IOP. By using a laser to reduce the production of this fluid, we can lower the pressure inside the eye. This treatment option is ideal for patients who have not had success with medications or other laser treatments.

For patients whose glaucoma is not controlled with drops or laser treatments, MIGS offers a less invasive surgical option. MIGS procedures use tiny incisions and advanced technology to improve the eye’s drainage system, reducing IOP with less risk, less pain, and a quicker recovery time than traditional glaucoma surgery. Some popular MIGS procedures include the iStent, Hydrus Microstent, and the Xen Gel Stent.

In some cases, traditional glaucoma surgery may be necessary to reduce IOP. Procedures like Trabeculectomy and Tube Shunt Surgery create new drainage pathways for fluid to exit the eye, lowering pressure and preventing further damage to the optic nerve. These surgeries are typically reserved for more advanced cases of glaucoma or when other treatments have been ineffective.
